Mabs is a highly accomplished, values-driven, strategic leader with over 28 years of distinguished policing experience. Mabs served as Deputy Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police (2022–2024), overseeing a £196m budget and 3,000 officers and staff. His leadership brought a “phenomenal” transformation in performance, as recognised by His Majesty’s Inspectorate.
Previously, Mabs held senior roles in Greater Manchester Police and West Yorkshire Police, two of the UK’s largest forces. As Deputy and Assistant Chief Constable in Greater Manchester Police (2018–2021) he was responsible for a budget of £650m and 9,500 staff. He also led the policing response to Serious and Organised Crime, Public Protection, Intelligence, and Forensics.
Mabs has led on several high-profile major investigations, including the largest ‘stranger’ male rape case across Europe resulting in Reynard Sinaga receiving 88 life sentences. The murder and justice after acquittal of 17yr old Yousef Makki, featured in Channel 4’s Killed by a Rich Kid documentary and the UK’s largest Child Sexual Exploitation operation, involving 100+ victims and 182 perpetrators.
At the time of retiring in March 2024, Mabs was the most senior ranking Muslim police officer in the United Kingdom. Mabs has received multiple commendations for his leadership in complex cases and promoting equality. He was awarded an MBE in 2018 for services to policing and charity.
